How ’bout them angles

3 common rafters, 4 hip rafters, 16 jack rafters – and I still have to figure out how I want to frame up the entrance area (where the 4th common rafter would have been). We want some kind of dormer – skylight – thingy. I’ll do that in 2x6s so it won’t be so heavy looking – and bonus – easier to cut the angles on the compound mitre saw.

This project is really evil so far. Another ‘what-the-heck-was-I-thinking’ project.

going to work on the dormer today. thought i’d made a time lapse of the process so I adjusted the webcam.
Plus I want to follow the cast shadow on the ground as the day progresses, and get an idea of what sort of sun/shade we’ll be living with.

I gotta get me one of them

Virginia and I are watching you. I don’t see a tether when you are on the roof.
    Safety!!!!!

    • JA says:

      1) low sloped roof
      2) 2x lumber installed around the edges with a 2 inch lip above the plywood
      3) Sue needs fresh material to show at her safety meeting “Don’t let your sister try this at home” presentations

  7. Mom says:

Is there a reason for the dormer or is it just an architectural feature?
Might make a nice pigeon coop!!

  8. JA says:

George was worried that we would need more light. But the walls are so high, that really, it is just decorative.

  9. Mom says:

Are you taking the dormer down???

    • JA says:

In the next post “dormer in 38 seconds” I explained that I discovered I had cut the rafters wrong. It just drove me crazy to look at it. One more afternoon and $6 in 2x4s to rebuild it seemed worth the aggravation.

Are you going to shingle the roof?
2nd question or more of a comment.
If you have a lip on the edge of the roof, won’t that keep the snow from sliding off letting it sit there and cause water damage to the roof?

  11. Mom says:

Logged on this morning and saw you shingling! so that answers part of my last question. When I came back a couple of hours later, I thought “What is Sue doing up on that roof and also without a harness”
Watching more, I guess it is not Sue but you.
    “Be careful up there”
