One dormer in 38 seconds

Timelapse of the dormer constructions. Boy oh boy, it was up and down the ladder a bazillion times. It turned out nicely – the roof line matches the rest of the hip rafters very well. Apart from screening and a little decorative fascia, I plan to leave the sides and front open.

Once I had all the plywood in place and I stopped to relax and watch a ball game, I looked up from below and swore a blue streak. I made a stupid error with the 2×4 rafters, and they carry the roof load on their weakest part. In all of my sketches I corrected for that, but when actually cutting the wood I did not.  Fortunately it is a very small roof, and I can rig up some hefty angle brackets to help carry the load. I will, however, always look up and curse.

After weeks of research and dozens and dozens of drawings. I’m finally ready to attack the dormer.

very cool, are you that quick with hardwood floors? We could use you around This Old House.

  2. It’s neat watching the leaves fill in on the Birch tree up front.

We watched you working while having beers with Michael in Koln. We envied the great weather, but not the work. Terrific job. And this is the first May long weekend in years we haven’t been at the Compound. (Pssst: you don’t need another pony from Brugge, you already have two.)
