Sue put me on to Bill Bryson’s work and I’m glad she did. He cracks me up.
This book chronicles seven weeks touring England by rail and by foot. It is not a reverent tour, though when he does enjoy something he will gush. Mostly he’s poking fun, often at himeself, in a cheeky manner. The set up for his stories does have a predictable rhythm, two steps to the left, one to the right, a delicate pause...

I watched again a particularly dismal film version of Jane Austen’s Persuasion. So dreadful I shudder to recall its failings. The writers took such liberties with the dialogue they gave lines to the wrong characters, moved conversations from one part of the book to another and the very worst crime of all – made stuff up.

I’m working away in my office, and as usual the animals are with me. I’m not sure if they figure they’re babysitting me or vice versa. It’s a small room so Mulder seldom does more than stop by and snooze for a few minutes before padding down the hallway to his mat. That’s where he can conveniently be in everyone’s way, all at once.
